About the Turtle Race Name Picker

Each name becomes a turtle on a shared track. Turtles are famously slow, so this race is a long, funny build-up to a winner. Add your list, press Begin the (slow) race, and watch the leaderboard shift until one turtle shuffles over the finish line.

Ways to use it in class

A lesson idea

Slow races are great for transitions. Start the turtles while students pack away or line up, and announce that the winner leads the line when the race ends. The long, silly build-up gives everyone a minute to settle, and the winner has a clear job to do straight away.

Good to know

Use the race length slider to keep the wait short when time is tight. Turn on No repeats and everyone gets a turn before any name comes up a second time, which keeps it fair over a whole week. Projector mode switches to bigger, higher-contrast graphics so the back row can see the result.

Questions teachers ask

Is the slowest-looking turtle ever the winner?
Any turtle can win. The outcome is chosen fairly before the race and the animation simply plays it out.
Can I stop a race early?
Reload the page to start again; your names stay in the box until you change them.
