Random Team Generator
Pairs, trios, or a set number of groups. Names are dealt out one at a time so sizes always stay within one of each other.
About the Random Team Generator
Paste your class list and choose whether to split by number of teams or by people per team. Press Deal the teams and the names are shuffled into balanced groups. You can give teams animal names, re-deal if you want a different mix, and copy the result to paste into a document or slide.
Ways to use it in class
- Form fair groups for a project or science lab.
- Make quick teams for a review game or sports activity.
- Mix up seating or partners each week.
- Create pairs for peer review or buddy reading.
A lesson idea
For project work, deal teams once at the start of a unit and keep them for several weeks, then re-deal for the next unit so students work with everyone over the year. Copy the result into a slide or shared document so every group can find its members at a glance when they arrive.
Good to know
Groups are as even as possible; if the list does not divide exactly, the extra people are spread across teams so sizes differ by at most one. Use Re-deal until the groups work for your class.
Questions teachers ask
- Can I keep two students apart?
- Re-deal until the groups work, or adjust the teams by hand after copying them.
- How many people can I split?
- Lists of a few dozen names work well for classes and clubs.
